FAQ
We at the Academy for Mathematics & Science are often asked about various aspects of our programs by parents and potential students. The information below covers some of the more common questions that we have received.
What Subject do you offer?
We offer tutoring in- Mathematics (SK - Gr. 12); English (SK - Gr. 9); Science(Gr.9 - Gr. 10); Chemistry (Gr. 11 - Gr. 12); and Physics (Gr. 11 - Gr.12).

What Tutoring material do you use?
We use an audio visual teaching program using three senses: listening; reading; and writing. Our material is designed to match the curriculum and the needs of the student and we have qualified staff to assist the student at all times.

What is the average cost of the tutoring programs?
The tutoring costs of the programs vary depending on the needs of the student. We have a variety of programs and payment options designed to fit all budgets. Our rates are amongst the most competitive of the major tutoring centers. Typically this varies between $32-$38 per hour session. The most important thing is to bring the student in for the free skill level evaluation so we can assess their needs.

What are the qualifications of the tutors?
Our tutors are certified teachers, graduates and university students in the fields of Math, Science and English. We have tested them in their area of competency and assess them to ensure that they have the aptitude to teach. All our tutors are fully trained in the Academy curriculum, material and methodologies.

What is the typical student/tutor ratio?
The Academy works on a ratio of 1 tutor to 4 or 5 students.

What is your tutoring environment like?
All students receive individualized attention. They work at their own workstation, on their material at their own pace. Because of this there is no peer pressure and hence the students are not afraid to ask questions. This also means that there are no discipline problems.

What results can i expect for my child?
On average we find that a student improves one to two grades in a period of six months. This, of course, is dependent on the student's regular attendance, completion of assignments, and work ethic. Our qualified staff will assist in all aspects of the tutoring in order to improve the student's skills.

We will administer an evaluation in order to establish the exact strengths and problem areas of the student. We will then design an individualized program for each student depending on their needs. Our programs are therefore tailor made for each student. We have access to our programs that are based on the curriculum to complement the material from their classroom. There is a backup of 1000's of extra worksheets in case they need even more practice material. The students can work at their own pace at individual workstations that offer an extremely focused environment with no distractions and the help of our qualified tutors.

What are the benefits of Academy learning center versus a private tutoring?
The quality of tutoring you get with a private tutor is directly related to that tutor. Private tutors do not have access to the tools and resources we have. This means they can't accurately pin point the problem areas or give the student the extra material needed to study for test and exams. Private tutors usually just coach the student through their homework. The unfortunate reality of this approach is that there is no guarantee that the student is learning during this process. The student also often then comes to rely on the coaching which is not present in the classroom or during exams when it is most needed.

Do you help with exam preperation?
We work hand in hand with our senior students in this critical area. After a discussion with the student, we will design individual exam packages according to the requirements of their curriculum. We will review the required material, do practice exams, and build the necessary confidence for the exam.

Can you accommodate gifted children or international Baccalaureate?
Yes, we can definitely work with children in Gifted or IB programs. All Gifted or IB programs are based on a curriculum and so is all our material. In Gifted or IB programs the material is the same, just taught at a higher standard. Since we have found that most of our material is already based on a slightly higher standard than most regular classrooms, we have no difficultly ensuring that the student receives the level of tutoring required to keep up with their class.

How about tutoring for special needs children?
We are happy to look at each case as it presents itself but please be aware that we are not set up to handle special needs children. The best thing to do would be for us to set up a meeting so we can discuss the specific tutoring needs of your child and allow you to see our facility and programs. If after the meeting you feel that we can be of service we would be more than happy to design the tutoring program for your child.
